Nestled in the heart of San Francisco, the The University of San Francisco (USF) blends rich Jesuit traditions with a forward-thinking academic approach. I am thrilled to introduce USF as the Nest’s first college spotlight. My Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from USF proved instrumental in shaping my career trajectory, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to feature USF. In this exclusive Q&A, we speak with Arnoldo Martinez, a USF graduate and admission counselor, who shares what makes the university unique—from the spirited Wolf & Kettle Howl to distinctive programs like Performing Arts & Social Justice and Biotechnology & Bioentrepreneurship.
Arnoldo offers insights into USF’s dynamic community, the type of students who thrive in its Jesuit-inspired, socially engaged environment, and valuable advice on navigating the college application process. Whether you’re drawn to entrepreneurship, research, or advocacy, USF provides an education that empowers students to make an impact, right in the center of San Francisco. Read on to discover what sets USF apart and how you can find your place at this innovative university!

Q: Tell us a fun fact or tradition that is unique to your university.
Arnoldo: One of our long-standing traditions actually happens during the first week our students reach campus. As students settle in and say goodbye to their family members, we introduce them to our long-standing Jesuit tradition. Where we gather as one community around our Wolf & Kettle statue and as the evening hours reach we create a howl in unison. This symbolizes not only the long-standing generosity that the Jesuits have come to be known for but also to symbolize that we are one community on this educational journey.
Q: What is the most unique major you offer?
Arnoldo: Considering that USF is located at the heart of the city of San Francisco, both our Performing Arts & Social Justice and Biotechnology & Bioentrepreneurship majors are some of the most unique majors you will find. Starting with our Performing Arts & Social Justice program, this major is focused on ensuring that students with a passion for the arts are not only getting the necessary professional experience on what it means to establish themselves amongst the art community but also empowers them to carry the motto that the arts can and have made an impact across society most notably right here in San Francisco. The Performing Arts & Social Justice program embodies a perfect balance of both professional and community engagement that many of our students find rewarding. Now, in terms of our Biotechnology & Bioentrepreneurship program, this is the newest undergraduate major, and it’s crucial to note that this stems from our successful Master’s in Biotechnology program, which will continue to highlight innovation, which people have come to know and love about San Francisco. Within our Biotechnology & Bioentrepreneurship program, we are striving to instill skills that will guide our students in finding a lifelong career within the industry. Our students will not only find dedicated spaces on campus to enhance their craft but also be required to work within the industry as part of an internship course all students must complete.
Q: Who is the best-fit student for your university?
Arnoldo: At USF, we are seeking students who are dedicated to excelling in both the academic classroom and their local communities. As a Jesuit University, we have found that students whose values are centered around social justice and community engagement often find the most fulfillment within our campus.Combined with our location, students have an innovative drive to utilize their skills to impact a variety of industries through entrepreneurship, research, and service. The best-fit USF student is one who acknowledges that they have a social responsibility to support their community while utilizing their experiences, care for others, critical thinking and analytical skills to impact the future.
Q: What application plans do you offer, and how should students determine which plan is best for them?
Arnoldo: At USF, we offer the following application plans, which we operate on a two-deadline approach. Early Action & Early Decision I are due November 1, while Regular Decision and Early Decision II are due January 15. Our early applications are recommended for students who have identified USF as one of their top college choices and they have a strong academic record leading into their senior year, as our review process won’t include their senior grades. For our later application deadlines, we recommend for students who would prefer extra time to improve their academic profile, as we will consider their 7th semester grades during their senior year. Early Decision I and Early Decision II admission plans are recommended for students who consider USF as their top choice and are a good fit academically, socially, and financially.
Q: What is your best application advice for prospective students?
Arnoldo: Take your time, and remember you are not alone in this process. We understand that applying to college can seem overwhelming as you try to juggle enjoying the last few months of high school. We strongly encourage you to be proactive and connect with your community, including us. We are here to help you along your college admission journey. So if there is a question about what your major entails or how you can stand out within your writing prompts, connect with us. We want you to know that your voice in your college admission process is important and no question is too small.
Helping you Soar Sooner,
Carrie
