American University (AU), a student-centered research institution in Washington, D.C., is a vibrant community of “changemakers”—students who are passionate about tackling society’s biggest challenges. While its proximity to the nation’s capital is a major draw, providing unparalleled internship and networking opportunities, the university’s strengths run deeper. Academically, AU is renowned for its highly-ranked programs in international relations, political science, and communication, including unique interdisciplinary majors like CLEG (Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics & Government). The campus itself is a peaceful escape from the city bustle, as it’s an accredited arboretum filled with tons of trees and flowers! This blend of a traditional college setting with urban access is made even more convenient with the Metro U-Pass, which provides unlimited travel to explore the city’s countless museums, monuments, and cultural sites. It’s no wonder that a number of U.S. presidents have made their way to campus, from John F. Kennedy to Joe Biden, and its impressive alumni network includes prominent figures in politics, media, and entertainment like Judge Judy and actress America Ferrera. This unique combination of academic rigor, a dynamic student body, and an unmatched location makes American University a place where passion truly becomes action.
In today’s College Spotlight we speak with Kelly Herron Woolf, Regional Assistant Director of Admissions at American University, who shares what makes the university unique– beyond the “guidebook.”

The Nest: Tell us a fun fact or about a tradition that is unique to your university.
Kelly: One of my favorite fun facts about American University is that we have had several presidents visit campus including – Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden!
The Nest: What is the most unique major you offer?
Kelly: One of our unique majors at AU is CLEG in the School of Public Affairs. This interdisciplinary major (Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics & Government) is designed for students who want the broad background critical for effective public affairs decision making and the practical training necessary to address social problems as public issues. This is a great major for students who are looking for a little bit of everything D.C. has to to offer. Plus, it’s a great conversation starter in your job interview!
The Nest: Who is the best-fit student for your university?
Kelly: At AU, we call our students changemakers. We want students who are looking to make a difference in their community and are ready to take on the biggest challenges our society is facing. Our students are activists, artists, researchers, scientists, and advocates with the drive, skills, and creativity to better our constantly changing world!
The Nest: What application plans do you offer, and how should students determine which plan is best for them?
Kelly: We offer Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision.
Early Decision is best for students who know without a doubt that American University is their top school. As Early Decision is a binding agreement, it’s always best to sit down with your support team and determine if this is the best route for you! If you know that AU is your first-choice school and you are committed to attending if admitted, Early Decision may make the most sense. The applicant pool is smaller, which makes it easier for applicants to stand out. Additionally, students admitted via Early Decision have priority access to class and housing registration!
Early Action is new to AU – we just started offering Early Action in Fall 2024 and it was a huge success with our applicants! This is a great option for students who have a strong interest in American University and want to know their decision early on. This allows you additional time to compare financial aid offers, visit campus, and determine if AU is the right fit for you!
Regular Decision is our final application plan. Students must apply by January 15 and will receive their decision by mid-April.
The Nest: What is your best application advice for prospective students?
Kelly: My advice to all students, regardless of where they are applying, is to be genuine! I am not looking for a student who has perfect grades, is president of every club on campus, and stars in the Spring musical. I am looking for a student who is excited about their college journey and is ready for the next chapter of their life! Your authenticity shines in your application; take your time with your application and be your true self.
